Lost in Music
“Lost in Music,” a gig-theatre show that draws inspiration from the timeless tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. Imagine a musical power couple on an epic journey to hell and back. This show dives into the magic of music, a story that’s been echoing through the ages. But here’s the twist: in “Lost in Music,” young musicians take the spotlight, sharing what music means to them and how it shapes their lives, friendships, and identity.
What makes this gig-theatre special? It’s a mashup of live music, spoken storytelling, and micro-cinema, all brought to life by a super-talented ensemble featuring names like Alex Neilson (Trembling Bells, Alex Rex), Jill O’Sullivan (Sparrow and the Workshop, Jill Lorean, bdy_prts), and Robin Campbell. But that’s not all – the stage is also graced by local musicians who joined forces with the pros. These young talents didn’t just watch from the sidelines; they rolled up their sleeves in workshops, collaborated, composed, rehearsed, and will be belting out their own tunes alongside the seasoned cast. This is no ordinary show; it’s a one-of-a-kind performance that blends the best of both worlds!
Liam Russell, our Youth Development Officer, worked closely with Magnetic North to support six local young musicians to perform as part of the production. The company also took on a young person from the area as a marketing intern, to help promote the performance in Dumfries & Galloway and through this gain some useful promotional insights and skills. In addition, the company provided workshops for local young musicians which related to their interests and some of the themes in the production.
Our organisation’s Young Promoters’ Group also played a key role in the planning and delivery of the performance and workshops. Two of them appeared on stage and others worked on the evening in a variety of roles, taking on responsibilities for gathering content for social media; front of house duties; shadowing the event’s technical team; and assisting with artists liaison duties.
